TeleTrusT gives out Innovation Award at ISSE 2009
IT Security conference in The Hague a sounding success
At the 'ISSE 2009' in Den Haag (NL) German IT security association TeleTrusT awarded the "TeleTrusT Innovation Award" to IT security solutions chosen from a large number of submissions from companies and institutions across Europe. Prof. Dr. Norbert Pohlmann, TeleTrusT Chairman of the Board and Dr. Holger Muehlbauer, TeleTrusT Managing Director, presented the winners:
- CECA (Confederación Española de Cajas de Ahorros/Spanish Savings Banks Confederation) claimed first prize with their project "Digitalized signature for financial sector branches". The award was received by Mr. José Luis Martín Velayos, Deputy CEO of Caja de Avila, and Mr. Santiago Uriel Arias, Cooperation CIO of CECA. (www.ceca.es)
- The second winner was Sirrix AG, Germany, for the solution "Trusted VPN System". (www.sirrix.com)
- Two companies tied for third place: Bundesdruckerei, Germany, for their 'Modern Identity Management – Car Registration Scenario' and ObjectSecurity Ltd., United Kingdom, for their application security tool 'Open PMF 2.0'. (www.objectsecurity.com; www.bundesdruckerei.de)
At the 'ISSE 2009', one of the largest independent IT security conferences in Europe, more than 350 participants discussed current IT security topics. European and non-European academic and business experts presented IT security scenarios, study results and approaches. Topics covered ranged from Identity Management, Data Protection and Social Engineering to Large Scale Public Applications and aspects such as Cloud Computing and Data Loss Prevention.
ISSE is jointly organized by eema, the European Association for e-Identity and Security, and TeleTrusT Germany. Patron of the conference is ENISA (European Network & Information Security Agency). The Municipality of The Hague acted as host for 2009. Next year's ISSE will take place in Berlin, Germany.
Images of the winning application

- This photo was captured at a teller in a branch of Caja Avila, one of 45 savings banks in Spain.
More and more customers of Spanish Savings Banks are requested to sign on a SignPad. The Spanish Confederation of Savings Banks (Confederación Española de Cajas de Ahorros, CECA) introduces these high quality signature tablets in their primary process on a large scale.
Capturing signatures on signature tablets allows branches to execute a lot of typical operations without paper. Capturing the biometric characteristics of signatures enhances the security level of the process.

- Customer using SignPad eSignio.
Signature tablets with a very high resolution on the display, like this SignPad eSignio, offer various additional use options: The Spanish Confederation of Savings Banks (Confederación Española de Cajas de Ahorros, CECA) demonstrates the feasibility of using the signature tablet as a soft keyboard as well.
For applications still requiring a PIN entry the SignPad offers this option for a gradual move from knowledge-based authentication (using PIN and password) to a Biometric Authentication (using the dynamic aspects of handwritten signatures such as writing speed and different pressure levels).
This approach to combine Biometrics and smartcard based digital signatures is already reflected in the EU regulation about Electronic Signatures in the year 1999.
